RESUME
TIPS - Part Two [next]
SIMPLE
FORMAT
First
step towards making sure your resume downloads straight into employer databases:
use your family name as your file name not CV or resume etc.
For
example using smith.bill.doc is good document control; this makes sense to
recruiters.
Avoid
using all capital letters; you never see all capitals used in corporate
documents, newspapers or magazines because it is very difficult to read,
we like most employer will not accept resumes in this format.
Even
worse when used in emails this the equivalent of
shouting at employers, most impolite and bad manners, not
the way to get hired.
Why
make your resume difficult to read: our quality assurance policy is not to forward resumes in all
capital letters to clients.
HELPING
EMPLOYERS
One document
is faster to open: less likely to get separated, keep all your details together by
combining
your resume & application letter .
Zipping your
files wastes employer time: you are actually stopping hiring managers opening your application instantly.
KEY
WORD SEARCHES
Text
based key word searches totally ignore graphics: avoid bloating your
file size by using photos, graphics, macros, columns, images, logos or other
non-essentials.
Your
email resume should not exceed
three pages or 100 KB; employer networks including ours will reject
larger files that are slow to download, do not zip your resume to fix
this fault.
Avoid
generic bulleted
statements such
as proactive,
self-motivated, mature, dedicated, disciplined, energetic; recruiters
just ignore them, these qualities are dealt with during reference
checking.
[sample resume style]
SPELL
CHECK
Make a good first impression: be professional; does your resume make
sense; incorrect spelling not
only gives the impression you are careless but can stop
your skills being identified by any employer using key word searches.
Have
your resume proofread by a colleague: you double check your own work, this is an
established printing axiom.
DOCUMENT
SIZE
With
30
seconds to attract the hiring managers attention you need
to edit your resume down to 3-4 pages, try to market your
key skills on the first page.
Resume details should cover
only your most current or relevant skills &
experience; you can supply more details on request or at interview.
200kb
LIMIT
Email
resume
attachments should be being text based: these should not exceed
200kb:
this is 15 pages of text, avoid zipping to reduce
file sizes, many companies
may delete large files
without review.
To
keep in line with our client requests
our policy is to refuse to accept applications that exceed
200kb file
size.
Why
annoy employers
by wasting their precious time and resources sending files that take minutes to download.
You
should avoid
sending scanned copies of qualifications, certificates unless requested:
key word searches for qualifications etc. cannot read graphics only text.
VIRUS CHECK.
Infection
means instant rejection; Microsoft Word files in particular can be a serious virus
risk, double check
your resume to avoid instant deletion.
Never
ever send .exe files: to be sure it pays
to use several virus scanners: why risk your
application being deleted.
Our
policy like most companies is to not accept email resumes: we
delete these at the server without notice.
ATTACHMENTS
Your resume like many others is probably be currently formatted in
latest version of MS Word, Word Perfect etc: beware if you have prepared
your resume on your company network for email transmission.
Lurking in your files may be hidden
problems for employer
networks: remove macros, passwords, logos, graphics, columns,
borders, company templates, these imbedded formats are not always compatible with
employer networks.
ETIQUETTE
Remember
the global nature of email; you will have not only contend with people
used to another language, but different versions of English, document and paper sizes.
Keep
it simple or be rejected; that is why text or rich text format is your
best option, used by most professionals.
You are the
person finally responsible for the standard of your job application; employers do not have the time to waste time fixing your mistakes,
why make it easy for them to reject your job application.
With
any major company your initial job interview will be all electronic; make
sure you understand very
competitive nature of electronic recruitment.
To
succeed you must market your skills instantly to employers: using only
some of these techniques should convince employers to hire you first over
hundreds of other applicants.
